INTERVIEW | Victors

Made up of Harry (vocals, guitar, synth), Simon (guitar, synth), Leon (drums), and Dom (bass, synth), Victors create relatable lyrics for near enough everyone. The band have played alongside the likes of Kaiser Chiefs as well as King No-One and have hit it off with releasing singles, Slow Down and I Think About You Every Night.

Their unique style of pop-rock has grabbed the attention of BBC Radio 1, ITV's This Morning and has featured in playlists by Topshop and Spotify. For fans of The 1975, you're going to love Victors and their sound.

I'm a big fan of the band after listening to them, particularly their new single, Big City, which is going to be released on the 26th April. You're in for a treat with this single.

I had a chat with the band about their new music and to learn a bit more about them.

How did the band form?

Harry (singer) first came across Simon (guitar) using online ads on gumtree. After meeting up for a drink and having a few rehearsals together things started happening very quickly and at the beginning of 2016 ‘VICTORS’ was born. We then found Dom (bass) shortly after in the same way, by advertising online. Once we needed a drummer, Dom got in touch with Leon (drums) via Facebook and straight up asked him if we wanted to join. It’s as simple as that!

Where did the name come from?

I really wish there was a profound meaning behind the name, but it actually came from the show ‘Made in Chelsea’. One night I (Simon) was watching it (it’s my guilty pleasure show) and I saw that there was a girl named Toria in one of the episodes. So, I thought to myself ‘What if the band name could be something artistic and edgy like a girl’s name? Like Victoria?’ But then I realised that sounded too much like solo artist so I scrapped the idea. As I was going to sleep that night the name ‘Victors’ came to mind, but I thought it sucked and wouldn’t catch on... Anyway we’ve been called Victors for 3 years now and we couldn’t be happier.

Describe ‘VICTORS’ in under 8 words.

Devilishly handsome and extremely modest.

You’ve supported some great names like Kaiser Chiefs and have had support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, what’s been your most memorable moment of ‘Victors’ so far?

That’s a tough one there’s been so many highlights. Leon’s (drummer) first show with us was in front of 20,000 people in Leeds last December, we’ve been lucky enough to have been played on NFL, sparking our American fan base; I guess my favourite moments are when I see people’s tweets about us or videos of them covering our songs and just showing support and love for what we do. It’s so humbling and mind blowing at the same time.

What’s the inspiration behind Big City?

All our songs are written differently. Big City was literally written in one night in our apartment. I (Harry) wrote about regretting past decisions, staying up all night, sitting in parked cars talking stuff out. Just real life basically.

How would you describe Big City for someone who hasn’t listened yet?

I (Harry) would describe it as having 80s elements like a lot of our stuff does, with the keyboard sound. It’s a slight step away from our older tunes as they were heavily guitar based. As we’ve matured as song writers we’ve been experimenting with different ideas, with the result of ‘Big City’ being heavily piano based.

Big City Teaser

What can we expected from ‘Victors’ in the coming months?

We’ve been in and out of studio in the last month working on stuff that we’ve never done before, so I guess you’ll see. In the meantime we have shows coming up in Leeds, London, Huddersfield, Wakefield, Wales, the Lake District & many more to be announced.

When you get a chance to sit down and have a cup of tea, what’s your go-to biscuit?

Well 3 out of 4 of us are vegan/vegetarian so any of those lovely vegan biccies is fine by us! Oreos are vegan so they’d have to be number 1.

If you could only listen to one album for the next three months, what would you listen to?

It would have to be ‘Blonde’ by Frank Ocean. But we’d sneak in ‘Geography’ by Tom Misch under my shirt and slyly listen to that on the side.

What’s your must-watch film right now?

I (Simon) was recently at the Vaults theatre festival in London and one show in particular that really stuck out for me was ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’. I was blown away by the acting and the story, it was so well done. I haven’t seen the movie of it yet so that’s next on my list.

When you’re not writing music, onstage or recording, what can you be found doing?

Two things: sipping a flat white or long black in a coffee shop somewhere and have a Netflix and chill (the non-sexual kind btw).

Do you have a message for your fans?

The support you have given us so far has been overwhelming and we never expected to have such a huge response so early on. We can’t wait to share with you what we’ve been working on for 2019 so stay posted! Love Harry, Simon, Dom & Leon
