TOTM (Time Of The Month) got in contact with me the other day about a campaign that they wanted to start all about that dreaded 3-7 every girl has every month, this campaign is called #TalkingPeriods. I thought this was a great campaign as periods are such a taboo and I have no idea why, it's a natural process isn't it? So why are we so shush about the whole thing?
Periods are a nightmare, I hate them. I have an app that helps me determine when I'm due and that's great, honestly. But sometimes, that's just not enough. Some women can tell you the exact day that they will start their period and I'm not one of them. In fact, I'm that woman that is all over the place. So to say that my periods cause a lot of hassle is an understatement. A big one.

I've never really had a really bad period story where I've come on my period unexpectedly, I'm pretty prepared when it comes to the time of the month. However, there are a few times where it has taken me by surprise. The most memorable moment isn't the most interesting to be completely honest with you so as well as telling you about it, I'm going to give you some tips about how to prepare for mother nature's surprise gift.
I sat my GCSEs quite recently and I was devastated to see that my period would fall right in the middle of them. Sitting in a hot exam hall, surrounded by lots of people is not somewhere you want to be when on your period. I am super irregular but I stuck to my app and went along with the dates it was telling me. What I wasn't prepared for was the maths exam I had.

Maths is one of my preferred subjects so I took it pretty chill even though the night before I somehow couldn't stick to any revision. That should have told me something. I woke up the morning of my exam with cramps, this isn't unusual for me at all - cramps are a regular thing I endure throughout the month, blood or no blood.
The exam hall was warm that day and I was in the third column which meant I had to go in first and leave last. As I was sitting the exam, I got more cramps but didn't really think anything of it. I'm so thankful I wore black trousers that day because after I headed to the toilet and noticed that mother nature had payed a visit early. I'm also very thankful that I got a lift home that day too as my sister had taken my supplies out of my bag that morning for herself.
So my story isn't thrilling at all really, just really annoying. But these are some of my tips on how to be prepared for an unexpected period.
Don't wear white a week before you're due on your period - who knows, you could be early!
Make sure you're wearing a hoodie or something you can tie around your waist incase of an emergency.
Always carry a spare pair of underwear
Always carry a pad/tampon around
Wear a liner a few days before you're due on your period
Get yourself an app to avoid the constant guessing

DeleteOh my gosh, this reminds me of the time I had a horrific unexpected period. Similar to yours, I was in class when it happened. I didn't have an exam or anything, it was just another regular class. The bell rung, I got up and waited for my mom to pick me up. She dropped me off at an audition and before we went in, my mom gasped and asked if I knew my period started today... let's just say, it was heavy... and I was wearing WHITE. I was so mortified because I essentially walked around with a blood stain on my butt and nobody told me about it. Thank goodness it was summer school which meant only a fraction of kids were at school, and many of my classmates for that class didn't even attended my school during the regular school year.
