INTERVIEW | Plested

Recently signed to Atlantic Records, Plested is no stranger to the music industry. The singer/songwriter has worked with the likes of Little Mix, Zayn, The Vamps, Lewis Capaldi, Kygo and Miguel. Last week, Plested released his new single, Either You Love Me Or You Don't and I interviewed him about it.

Plested's previous releases include his EP, First & Foremost, which he describes as "A deep sea dive into my heart as a songwriter trying to figure out love, a career and the balance between them. I chose the songs that meant as much to other people as they do to me; they're honest, raw and rough around the edges - which is exactly how I like to see myself as an artist.".

Either You Love Me Or You Don't is a a lyrically relatable song about someone trying to figure out if their feelings for someone are reciprocated. I'm a massive fan of the song and think that Plested is a name you'll be hearing more of in the future. He has a way with words and a great ear for a hit single (he co-wrote Little Mix's Touch).

The raw emotion and acoustic guitar makes me feel like this song could be played in the background of one of those cheesy romance films (got to love a big cheesy romance film once in a while, eh?). A beautiful ballad with some meaningful lyrics that we can all cry to when no-one is watching, this tender song has been gracefully created.

If he keeps it up with the relatability and the catchy tunes, his music is going to be much loved by nations. You can read my interview with Plested below.

____________

You’ve just come back from supporting Nina Nesbitt on her tour, how was that?

Nina is an old friend, so I jumped on the bus with her and drove from East coast to West coast America. Met some of the loveliest fans along the way, new and old. Now I just can't wait to get back over to America and tour some more!!!

For people who don’t know who you are, you’ve worked with the likes of Zayn, Naughty Boy, The Vamps and Little Mix, writing music for them. What’s your biggest musical achievement to date?

Another song I wrote is Kygo ft. Miguel - Remind Me to Forget, last year it went Top 10 on the radio charts in America. Definitely a massive achievement for me that one, and it made my parents proud, which is always a winner.

If there’s one person that you could work with, who would your dream collaboration be?

Justin Vernon aka the lead singer of Bon Iver. He is quite possibly the coolest man on planet earth, creating a sound that not only blows me away every time I listen to a song, but also sees him collaborating with the likes of Kanye West. I just need to be as cool as him basically!

Your new single, Either You Love Me Or You Don’t, has some relatable lyrics for those trying to figure out if someone like them. What’s the story behind this?

I wrote the song a couple years back with my best friends. I was in a situation at the time where I was picking up completely the wrong signals from a girl and it seemed like a no brainer to write a song from that friend zone/confusion angle - which I've often found myself in too. Sometimes you just want a straight answer, either it's yes or no.

Emily Warren (Dua Lipa, Sigrid, Khalid) and Mac and Phil (Emeli Sande, David Guetta, James Arthur) worked on this track with you. How do you feel they helped you with the song?

I've known this little gang of geniuses for years now (I went to school with Mac & Phil) and I love working with them purely for how open and honest the songwriting process can be. Emily is a professional at pulling all the right emotions out of me when needed and Mac and Phil provided the energy the song needed to sound so massive!! I also wrote Habits, Make A Start, Lost For Words and some more with them and we all hang out together a lot. I couldn't be happier that this little musical baby was made with them.

For someone who is in this tough situation of trying to read signals from someone to figure out if feelings are reciprocated, what advice would you give them?

Always be honest with the person, easier said than done I know, but it's better that than wasting your heart on someone who doesn't want or deserve it. My best advice, is to just play them my new song and tell them to make their mind up by the end of the three and a half minutes.

You went to go and see Shawn Mendes live the other day, what’s your favourite song of his and why?

Yes! What a guy! I have a friend called Scott who writes a lot of the Shawn songs, one of which is 'In My Blood', which I got to hear in the studio before it was released! I'll always remember how inspired that song made me feel on first listen, the fact that its lyrically so honest and still has a HUGE chorus.

What’s your favourite season of Game of Thrones?

Wow, tough one, I'm a bit of a GoT nerd, but I have to say season 7 blew me away. That ending though!!! (No spoilers) let's just hope this last season does the show justice (I think it will).

Who is one band/artist that you are most excited about this year?

I literally can't go into any session with out the name Lewis Capaldi being mentioned. I got to write a couple songs with Lewis and like to say he's a friend now, but he is genuinely one of the loveliest people I know, his music is undeniable and he's just had a UK No.1 for 7 weeks. I'm so excited to watch his journey with album 1 and onwards.

If you had to choose to play either festivals or arena tours for the rest of your life, where would you rather perform?

Festivals. It's hard to describe the feeling of rocking up to field knowing that there are so many incredible people willing to brave mud and rain in the name of music. Nothing quite like it.

Do you have a message for your fans?

Just a big old CHEERS, for joining me on this adventure so early in my career and being so lovely. I've met fans all around the world and it always surprises me when they sing along to every word. More shows announced soon and MERCH, so keep your eyes peeled.
