Interview with Josh from With Confidence

With Confidence are an Australian pop punk band from Sydney - if you haven't heard of them; where have been??? Formed in 2012, the band is made up of Jayden, Josh, Inigo and Luke. Their album, Better Weather, was released in June last year and was a hit! They've since released the album's B-sides. Don't you jut love B-sides? I sure do.

I had the opportunity to chat to Josh (right) all about their album, tours, supporting some amazing acts like Mayday Parade, and what is coming up in 2018. If you're a fan of With Confidence, this is something you've got to read - it's got a few exclusives in there!

Last year you released your album, Better Weather, and that went down really well! What made you want to release the B-Sides?
When we went in for Better Weather we had a lot of finished/almost finished songs. There were a few that were 90% finished like these two that never quite came together in the studio. I think even when we cut them we knew we'd come back into the studio one day and do the final touches. It's really cool to see people enjoying them. It's great to put out some unheard material and we're loving playing some "new" songs live!

You’re heading over to the UK mid-September, what are you looking forward to most over here?
We've been pretty spoilt over in the UK. This will be our third time back this year. It's sick to support on an album anniversary tour for a record we all listened to a decade ago too!

Mayday Parade are one of your musical influences, how did it feel to have the opportunity to tour with a band that you’ve looked up to since you began?
It's pretty mental, these days a lot of the  bands we tour with are either those we grew up listening to or newer bands that have popped up and we listen to a lot now. This tour is a special one though, it's such a big album. Absolutely stoked we get to hear it night after night.

Slam Dunk, Vans Warped Tour and next on the list is Unify. How do you find festivals, compared to a normal performance?
I personally love festivals. I've always gone to festivals since I was younger. I think the vibe at a festival is completely different to a regular show. You see wacky and weird things happening in the crowds because everyone's out to party, I think bands are a lot more relaxed too. Plus I love planning out my day and running around to catch like twenty bands.

You’ve had plenty of big opportunities such as heading over to Japan with the likes of The Wonder Years and ROAM, supporting Don Broco and Against the Current and now Mayday Parade. What’s your most memorable moment during your career as a band?
Man, it's such a hard question. There's definitely moments across so many tours and shows. The 5SOS Australian tour is an obvious one. Those shows were 5000-9000 people, that alone is mental. But I remember at the Brisbane show we asked the crowd to throw up their phone lights in a song and it was one of those absolutely breathtaking moments.

It looks like you had lots of fun on your Australian Headline Tour – despite being ill towards the end of it. What’s your favourite thing about being on the road?
I love travel and seeing new places. I'm so thankful that we get to tour full time. It's been a goal of mine since I was 18 so to have achieved it last year is amazing. Back in 2014-15 we would tour Australia every 3-4 months and I would look forward to it so much. I'd be working and counting down the days til we could go off again for two weeks and I'd look to forward to it all even the bullshit and the 20 hour drives hahah. It's what I love doing and I can't imagine not touring right now.

Other than writing songs about dogs, getting wine on the ceiling, watching Harry Potter and driving a bus on the roads of GTA, what do you like to do when you’re not playing shows?
Personally I like to stay wherever a tour ends up for a little while. I fell in love with Amsterdam back in March/April. When I'm home I like to stay busy or I start going insane. I also tend to do nothing but hang out with my dogs when I'm first home.

If you were to suggest an Australian food (it could be a flavour of crisps or even fairy bread) to an Australian outsider, like myself, what you suggest?
Definitely Tim Tams. They're your new favourite biscuit.

On a Friday night would you rather have a chill night on the sofa watching your favourite film, or be partying until the early hours?
I do love movies a lot but sometimes you gotta get out the house and be social. I'm gonna sit on the fence and say I'll do one every other week haha.

What can we expect from With Confidence in 2018?
We're recording a new album at the end of the year in LA. I'm not sure how much I can say but definitely expect album 2 in 2018. We're also doing some of our most exciting touring ever.

Finally, do you have a message for your fans?
Thanks for all that you do. If it weren't for the people listening we wouldn't be doing what we do. I'll never take that for granted and we're going to do everything we can to give you a kick ass second album to say thanks.

Cheers, Josh
