SINGLE REVIEW: Marsicans, Your Eyes | IN ASSOCIATION

Last week I gave you a bit of a hint about Marsicans new single, Your Eyes. The song was released yesterday and I'm sure you've been loving it. The single is all about expectations and keeping up with other people around you.

Produced by the Mickey Dale (Paul McMartney and Vampire Weekend) and Jow LaPorta (David Bowie and Imagine Dragons), the single is a lot more raw than some of their previous songs. Bassist, Rob Brander, explains that the single is about a time in his life when he "felt he was being left behind by those around him", he felt like he was "treading water".

I had a chat with Rob about Your Eyes to get a bit more of an insight into the song.

'Your Eyes' is about meeting people’s expectations and feeling left behind. If your fans are going to take one thing from this single, what would you like them to take away?

The song was written at a time where those feelings were getting the better of me, but since then I have come to terms with the fact that everyone hits their stride at different times. I read one of those tragically cliched internet quotes about how ‘everyone’s clock is set to different times’. It told me not to worry about the successes and failures of others. In a weird way, the process of writing ‘Your Eyes’ helped me get to an optimistic place, so I hope it helps our fans too. If not, there are plenty of memes on twitter to keep you ticking over.

The song certainly has a lot more grit to it than previous single, Pop-Ups (Sunny at the Weekend) which is inspired by pop-up ads that made James laugh. Find out more about single Pop-Ups in my last interview with the band. Your Eye's is one belter of a song and is relatable to nearly everyone because at some point in your life, you have judged yourself in comparison to other people's success.

Marsicans are heading on tour in March through to May and will most definitely making festival appearances. Here's what Rob has to say about touring.

In March you’ll be touring and making live appearances on tour with others and at festivals. How did headlining Abbie McCarthy’s Good Karma Club come about?

We’d announced a headline tour and Abbie, who is a good friend, suggested we partner up. She helped curate the supports and we couldn’t be more excited to spend time on the road with our new gang. There are some ace line-ups.

Marsicans personally define Summer for me, so what festivals can we expect to see you at?

We have an exciting slot at this year’s Live At Leeds festival to kick things off, and we’ll be playing at Neighbourhood Weekender and 110 Above Festival. Apart from that, everything else is currently under wraps and to tell you would result in the untimely demise of our band by cannon fire.

You can catch Marsicans at the following live dates:

13 Mar - Preston, Dark Room
21 Mar - Leeds, Jumbo Records in-store *free entry
22 Mar - Lincoln, Engine Shed
23 Mar - Nottingham Rough Trade in-store *free entry
23 Mar - Luton, The Edge

Headline tour with Abbie McCarthy's Good Karma Club:
02 Apr - Bristol, Rough Trade
03 Apr - Birmingham, Mama Roux's
04 Apr - Southampton, Joiners
05 Apr - London, Dingwalls
06 Apr - Manchester, Academy 3
11 Apr - Glasgow, Stereo
12 Apr - Newcastle, Think Tank
13 Apr - Nottingham, Rock City Basement

04 May - Live At Leeds
25 May - Neighbourhood Weekender

Marsicans have some more music up their sleeve, we're hoping to hear more from them in early summer and they're currently working on a debut album which I will definitely be buying when it's released.

What do you think of Your Eyes?

Until next time...
