Tommy Maverick, Me in Me EP Review

Tommy Maverick is a Nigerian singer, he has just released his new EP 'Me in Me' on Saturday 8th October. He very kindly sent me a copy to listen to before the official release date and I must say, I love it! His chosen genre of music is very difficult to explain, Tommy likes to describe his EP as Alternative, Indie, Afro (country) and Blues. I couldn't disagree with him on this one.

It's quite obvious that Tommy has talent based off of this single EP, 'Me in Me'. The whole EP was written and composed by himself and was recorded in the space of a week with help from mastered and producer 'Monlee'. The inspirations behind each song is very evident. There are four songs featured on 'Me in Me' these are...

  • Riverband
  • So Help Me God
  • The Atlas
  • Too Much Too Little

This music is fantastic and I can definitely see a spot for Tommy Maverick in the current music industry, he has a fresh and unique sound that I'm sure will appear to many people. All of the songs on 'Me in Me' have their own sound, not one sounds like the other - I love this as I find songs that are similar pretty boring.

Riverbank

Riverbank is the first song that you will find on 'Me in Me' and I must say, Tommy has really set the bar high. This particular song is inspired by Vance Joy, Mumford and Sons and George Ezra, I think is voice sounds like a mixture of James Bay and George Ezra in this song. There is one aspect of the song that surprised me when it first entered as I didn't expect it...but it was a good surprise, it really makes the song! I'm not going to tell you because you'll find out when you listen to it!

So Help Me God

You can really hear the musical influences in this song. Tommy told me that his musical influences for this song were Jake Isaac, Kanye West and Mali Music. I'm not somebody who enjoys Kanye West as much as somebody like George Ezra but this song is making me rethink my preferred musician choices. This song has a really urban feel to it yet Tommy's personality is not lost within the music.

The Atlas

I have fallen in love with this song! Tommy's voice in this song is so authentic and it's difficult not to tap your foot to The Atlas. This song is inspired by Warsan Shire, Gary Clark Jr and Leon Bridges. The lyrics are so amazing as well.

Too Much Too Little

This particular song is probably the slower and more relaxed song on the EP. It's perfect for putting on in the background at a gathering or something like that. This song is influemced by people such as Leo Stannard and Asa.

Overall, I love this EP. Tommy chose to record every song live and I am so glad he did. The vibes that come through when your listen to 'Me in Me' is unreal. I think the acoustic sound is a great way to mix a varied amount of music genres and the lyrics to every song are so fantastic.
