My thoughts on Valentine's Day

Boyfriends and girlfriends; wives and husbands; just started dating; secret admirer's. Whoever you're celebrating Valentine's Day with this year, it's honestly a great day to be loved. Who said that the 14th February is THE day to tell people you love them though? To send your loved ones flowers or buy them gifts?

In the UK, I feel like Valentine's Day is only celebrated by those who love each other in a romantic way, whereas in other countries like the USA it's also about platonic relationships. Let's be honest, how many times have you been disappointed that you never received a card or flowers on the 14th February? I have. And I think that I wouldn't been so disappointed if the day was more about friendships and family as well as lovers.

One particular moment sticks in my mind whenever someone mentions Valentine's Day. It was an assembly in Year 3 and one of the teachers was talking about how you shouldn't just tell a person that you love them one day of the year. I remember sitting in that assembly agreeing with her. I went home and made it my mission to tell my friends and family that I loved them nearly every day. I wouldn't only say it, but show it as well.

Everyone needs to know that they are loved and how you show or tell someone that is up to you but whatever way you prefer, don't just do it on one day of the year. Every year I think that this will be the year when I finally get a card off of someone other than my mum. Why do we need cards anyway? It's a piece of card that basically tells someone that you like them.

Simply checking up on your friends once in a while, or sending them a meme you think that they will find funny are just small ways of showing someone you care. Spontaneously telling someone you love them makes them smile. Sending them flowers or buying something they like for no reason.

A few friends of mine have pulled a pack of Jaffa Cakes out of their bags when I met them for something as simple as a coffee. They do this because they know I like them and it's small things like that that let me know that they care. I don't need to be told, given something expensive or wait for the 14th February.

Yes, the 14th February is a gorgeous day for those who are in love. Going on dates, getting gifts, being showered with affection. All the things that the single people wish they were doing. There's no denying it, when you're in love, Valentine's Day is special but it should only be a little bit more special than any other day of the year. Why not do something for someone you love on the 6th March, or the 22nd September?

An example of mine is that me and my sister bought my mum a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to her last month just because. We had no particular reason to, just the fact that we wanted to show her that we loved her.

I think that Valentine's Day is a bit overrated if I'm being completely honest. Some people will agree with me, other's won't. It really depends on your situation and who you are as a person.

What are your thoughts on Valentine's Day?

Until next time...
