Interview With Oli from Marsicans

Over the past week I've been in touch with Marsicans. You may recognise their name since they are pretty much on all of my Spotify playlists. The band have been featured on BBC Radio 1's playlists too, with their single 'Friends', Marsicans have also just released their latest single, 'Too Good,' which has caused quite the stir, if you haven't heard it yet, you can do here. Made up of Oli (guitar), Rob (bass and keys), Cale (drums) and James (lead vocals and guitar), Marsicans are on the edge of becoming a big name in the industry with this cool, edgy, upbeat indie sound. After hearing that they were in Leicester I decided to get in touch, unfortunately I couldn't make the date to see them but I sent over some questions for their guitarist, Oli, to answer.

You’ve just played at the 110 Above festival alongside some big names. What was your favourite moment during the festival?

110 Above is such a great festival, they absolutely nailed it this year. One of the best things is just hanging out and catching up with loads of cool bands we’ve met from touring around. Performance highlights have to be Martin Luke Brown and D.I.D, who we’ve been big fans of for years.

How did the band form?

Cale, James and I were playing together at school, then Rob joined a few years later and injected his eloquent storytelling and love of synths into the mixing pot. James and Rob were living together around the same time too so there were many a late night songwriting session going on.

Where did the unique name, Marsicans, come from?

It’s pretty much just a word we stumbled across online. It’s taken from the name of an Italian bear that is found in the region of Marsica. The sad thing is the Marsican bear is critically endangered so maybe our career in music is only a way of raising awareness to help out our Italian furry brothers.

You’ve recently released your new single, Too Good, where did the influence for the song come from?

Instrumentation-wise, we had a couple of riffs that we were grooving around in rehearsal; one became the chorus melody and the other the verse. The last few songs we wrote were quite standard rock band in terms of sounds, so we were quite keen to throw in some slightly more electronic sounds into the mix.

Too Good was recently played on BBC Radio One. If you could shine a light on one new and upcoming music artist/band, who would it be?

Is it all right if I pick two? First one is a band called Heir who I saw recently and was really impressed. They’re really fun live and interesting, catchy pop tunes. Second is a band from Scotland called Vistas, they sound like all the bands I love plus we’re on the same label (big up LAB records).

All of your artwork for your music is pretty abstract. Do you have a say in the designs, if so, where do the ideas come from?

Our super-cool friend Liv Hodder creates the artwork for us. We usually just send her the track and she makes a series of collages whilst listening, the hardest part is choosing the final one. Follow her on Instagram (@livhodder) if you need a bit more colour in your life.

One of your musical interests is Circa Waves, how does it feel to be playing at the same festival, 2Q Lincoln, as them in October?

2Q is gonna be huge! We’re big fans of Circa Waves and Peace. I once paid about £70 for a signed Peace 7” off eBay. We’re also good mates with Jerry Williams and Trash so I’m hoping it’s gonna be like one big school disco with space raider crisps and those drinks that come in square cartons where you used to turn them upside down and chew a hole in the bottom to drink it. You did that, right?

Could you take a group selfie?

Yes, but that role is allocated to James who has the longest arms.

You’ve all done a ‘Band Blog’, what else do you like to do in your spare time?

James and I are quite into film photography at the moment. Cale spends his days off landscape gardening and Rob watches videos on youtube of guitar pedals that you need a PhD to operate.

To celebrate your Absence EP hitting 1 million streams on Spotify, you released a Downton Abbey styled video. Is that what you like to binge watch, or are you more like Game of Thrones fans?

Collectively, I’d say we were more Game of Thrones fans but personally I have trouble sticking with things so I got to about season 3 and started watching Narcos. I don’t think I was even bored.

What’s your best chat up line?

“Jill, do you like owls? I know a cracking owl sanctuary.”- Alan Partridge

Can any of you cook? If you can, what is your signature dish?

Cale makes a very good poached egg. Excellent technique. I went round to his house once for lessons.

If you could invite three people, dead or alive, to your dinner party, who would it be and why?

David Blaine, Robin Williams and Timbaland. Because just imagine how weird things would get and we’d probably come out the next day with a Timbaland pop banger to remember the night by.

Where do you see Marsicans in 2018?

Hopefully doing bigger tours, bigger stages and a ton of new music. We’ve also started writing a pilot for our own sitcom so should probably get to work on filming that.

Finally, do you have a message for your fans?

Yes! Thanks for putting up with our terrible banter and hope we see loads of you soon on the Clean Cut Kid tour in October.
